Bombykal, a Sex Pheromone of the Sphinx Moth Manduca sexta
نویسندگان
چکیده
The first sex pheromone of a Sphinx moth has been isolated from Manduca sexta (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) with the aid of an electroantennogram assay. It is attractive to males in a field test where its activity might be augmented by a second component in female extracts. Chemical tests and chromatographic properties identify the pheromone as a C16-aldehyde with a pair of conjugated double bonds. (E , Z^-10,12-hexadecadienal, (“bombykal”) was identical with the natural product. The comparison includes chromatography on three different capillary columns and determination of specific activities in the electroantennogram test.

A pheromone-degrading aldehyde oxidase in the antennae of the moth Manduca sexta.
Antennae of the tobacco hornworm moths Manduca sexta contain an aldehyde oxidase (AOX) that oxidizes aldehydes to carboxylic acids. The enzyme, which is distinguishable from aldehyde-oxidizing activities in other tissues, is secreted into the receptor lymph that bathes the primary olfactory dendrites. First detectable about 3 d before eclosion, AOX levels increase through the first day after ec...

Manduca sexta females attract their mates with the release of a species-specific sex-pheromone blend, with bombykal (E,Z)-10,12-hexadecadienal and (E,E,Z)-10,12,14-hexadecatrienal being the two major components. Here, we searched for the hawkmoth bombykal receptor in heterologous expression systems. The putative pheromone receptor MsexOr1 coexpressed with MsexOrco in Xenopus oocytes elicited do...
متن کاملAn olfactory-specific glutathione-S-transferase in the sphinx moth Manduca sexta.
Insect antennae have a primary function of detecting odors including sex pheromones and plant volatiles. The assumption that genes uniquely expressed in these antennae have an olfactory role has led to the identification of several genes that are integral components of odorant transduction. In the present study, differential display polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) was used to isolate 25 anten...
متن کاملSerotonin enhances central olfactory neuron responses to female sex pheromone in the male sphinx moth manduca sexta.
In the brain of the sphinx moth Manduca sexta, sex-pheromonal information is processed in a prominent male-specific area of the antennal lobe called the macroglomerular complex (MGC). Whole-cell patch-clamp recordings from identified projection (output) neurons in the MGC have shown that serotonin [5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)] increases both the excitability of MGC projection neurons and their r...
متن کاملAnisometric brain dimorphism revisited: Implementation of a volumetric 3D standard brain in Manduca sexta.
Lepidopterans like the giant sphinx moth Manduca sexta are known for their conspicuous sexual dimorphism in the olfactory system, which is especially pronounced in the antennae and in the antennal lobe, the primary integration center of odor information. Even minute scents of female pheromone are detected by male moths, facilitated by a huge array of pheromone receptors on their antennae. The a...
